Who doesn’t love a good throw pillow?!
Throw pillows are the easiest way to spice up your apartment, home, or even college dorm room. It’s a type of home décor that can make or break your space if you know what I mean. Having throw pillows can totally pull together a room and create the perfect, hominess feel whether they’re on your bed, couch, statement chairs, etc. Additionally, it is the best way to add creativity to your home and really accentuate your own interior design style.
But don’t get me wrong. Throw pillows can be PRICY. I’ve seen some beautiful throw pillows go for hundreds of dollars. Even though this is a sad fact, I have 2 AMAZING hacks that will save you tons of money when shopping for the most perfect throw pillows.
My FIRST throw pillow hack is: using the throw pillows that come with your couch to your advantage.
A lot of couches or comforter sets come with pillows. And they are often NOT cute or they come plain with no pillow covers at all. However, don’t get rid of them! We’re all about repurposing here.
For this throw pillow hack, what you can do is:
1. Remove the original pillow or pillow stuffing
2. Get rid of the outside or throw pillow covers they came with (we don’t need them!)
3. Purchase your new, SUPER CUTE throw pillow covers (check out some of my fav places to find perfect throw pillow covers on a budget below…)
4. Finally, stuff your new pillow and flux accordingly 😊
My SECOND throw pillow hack is: taking advantage of the HomeGoods/TJMaxx/Marshalls clearance section.
You can find some high-quality pillows at HomeGoods/TJMaxx/Marshalls in general. Specifically, in the clearance section! You can find some amazing feather-filled pillows (if you’re into that chopped style) for as low as $10-$15. BUT, the covers are often not it. That is the beauty about throw pillow covers.
Follow these 3 simple steps to take advantage of this throw pillow hack:
1. Raid your local HomeGoods/TJMaxx/Marshalls store to find your high-quality pillow inserts (doesn’t matter what they look like – don’t let the outside distract you!)
2. Purchase your budget-friendly throw pillow covers (check out my recommended spots below)
3. Lastly, remove the pillow insert from your clearance find and put it into your new cover (if the old cover doesn’t come off, you can just stick the pillow inside your new cover as long as it isn’t too see-through)
Both of these throw pillow hacks talk about budget-friendly throw pillow covers, so it’s only fitting that I share with y’all my fav places to find just that!
1. IKEA
I feel like this is an obvious one, but some might think IKEA doesn’t have cute throw pillow covers. They actually do! As long as you find the right ones and style them, they can totally elevate your apartment or home.
Two things I love about IKEA throw pillow covers are that they’re CHEAP and they have several neutral color options. I also think IKEA rotates the pillow covers they have throughout the seasons and they’re constantly coming out with new options for their customers!
I’ve linked some of my favs below:
I actually had 4 standard throw pillows come with the couch I purchased. And they were NOT CUTE. They just didn’t match my style and I felt like they just blended in with my couch. It didn’t add anything to my living room. So what I did was I removed the stuffing from my old throw pillows, purchases some cheap neutral ones from IKEA, and restyled my entire couch.
You can see the before and after pictures below and it was truly a GAME CHANGER.
I wasn’t able to find all the links for my throw pillow covers in my living room, but I pulled together as many as I could find (along with some similar options I would go with):
GURLI
METTALISE
GULLKLOCKA
2. Amazon
Secondly, Amazon is another great place to find throw pillow covers that are budget-friendly. The hardest thing with Amazon is figuring out what to search for or what keywords to use to get the throw pillow covers that will fit your style!
I’ve compiled a solid list of some of my favs that align with my neutral, cozy, modern-vintage vibe I was going for (some of them even come in different colors and sizes to fit your needs):
And of course, the most amazing thing about Amazon is their return policy. They are super lenient in terms of returns, so if you decide that it doesn’t fit your style or wasn’t exactly what you were looking for, their return process is user-friendly and easy to follow!
3. Hobby Lobby
Another option that might be a bit shocking is Hobby Lobby. I know. For the longest time, I didn’t even know Hobby Lobby had throw pillow covers! However, there are definitely some neutral gems there that are super budget-friendly. If you’re extra lucky, you might even find some on clearance at an even cheaper price!
Here are my Hobby Lobby favs:
- Asymmetrical Tapestry Pillow Cover
- Natural Woven Pillow Cover
- Beige & Tan Striped Pillow Cover
- Black & Cream Ticking Striped Pillow Cover
- Black & White Jacquard Pillow Color
- Beige & Black Arrow Pillow Cover
The only con with these Hobby Lobby pillows is that you can’t feel the fabric/material as they come in plastic packaging. Although they have a great return policy so if you happen to not like the feel of your cover, you can easily return it with the receipt!
4. Target
The next place I’d shop for pillow covers is Target. Target doesn’t sell throw pillow covers separately. Instead, they sell throw pillows with the cushion included. Because of this, they are a bit on the pricier side.
Even though Target comes with the throw pillow cover and insert, the insert isn’t usually the best quality and often doesn’t look super high-end. This is where my hack mentioned above comes in handy. You can easily get a throw pillow from Target (with a cover that you like), remove the cover, and put it on a feather-filled clearance pillow you got from HomeGoods (that most likely came with an ugly cover).
Here are some of my favs from Target:
5. HomeGoods, TJMaxx, Marshalls
Last but not least, my favorite stores to shop at, HomeGoods, TJMaxx, and Marshalls. The best thing about these places is you can always find gems! Their online stores never do them justice. I had to add this one to my list because of my throw pillow cover hack, but also they do have a variety of very cute throw pillows. The cuter ones are often the more expensive ones, but I have found some great ones on clearance and they were STEALS. For example, the mud cloth one on my living room couch was from the HomeGoods clearance section for $15 (and the original was listed for $80)!
These stores can definitely surprise you, so it never hurts to pop in and take a peek at what they have.
If you’ve made it all the way to the end…
